Succulents and spider plants

I've kind of been obsessed over plants and planting these past few months.  DC started me off with a potfull of succulents on my birthday, which I left sitting precariously on a narrow window ledge and proceeded to knock off.  The poor things did not recover.

A few months later I treated myself to a couple more on a trip to Ikea:

new succulents

They started shedding their leaves:  the unfortunate victims of overwatering, methinks.  Within a couple of weeks they began to droop more and more.  I'd find their sad leafdroppings on the table, a little more each day.

dying succulents!

The fledgling hydrangea and spearmint cuttings didn't survive my week's absence in Hawaii, and since then I've failed on newer mint, as well as geranium, cuttings.  But I'm still determined to grow a healthy -- and free! -- mini garden!

My single hope is the spider plant that just. doesn't. stop.  I put it on the table that also holds my TV, open the windows to let the southern light in, and water every few days.

spider plant[I deserve a prettier pot!]

And it even makes babies!  I am hoping to plant them in water or pots, and have little holiday prezzies for my coworkers and other friends.  The gift that keeps growing, indeed.  Here's a shot of my prototype, a baby terrarium.

It's easy to see when I need to water; just fill to rock level.  Peasy!  And super cute!  There will definitely be more of these guys in the future.

Of course I'll continue to collect cuttings from friends and family (and neighbors), too, keeping my fingers crossed for success one of these days.  Wishmeluck!

Happy October!

Okay--I'm back, with my blogging mojo in tow!

After six weeks, my apartment retrofit is completely finished, the travels are done, and The Big Clean is ON.  But, it's going to be The Slow Clean, too, because there's much to do elsewheres.  Like knitting.  And crafting.  Oh, and I'm making a quilt.  And planning a party.  A Family Fiesta.  For my brother and his wife.  Because they are having a baby.  In December.  As are two other friends.  And three more are due in February.  And two people just found out they are expecting.

Nine weddings in '09.  Maybe 10 babies in '10?  Could be!

But while I do all these things, I need to update you lovelies on my where- and what-abouts these past weeks.  Picture-heavy posts forthcoming!  It feels good to be back here.  Home.

To knit or not to knit?

Coming home from Maui--yes, I know: two weeks ago--I was met with red lines of fire and black smoke in the San Gabriel Mountains (set to be contained this weekend) on the drive back home, and, opening my door, a layer of dust over the entire apartment--and the retrofitting is still not quite finished.  I've been living out of my laundry basket, growing  an expensive pile of dry cleaning, and--having forgotten to take out the trash before going to DC's last weekend--am dealing with a mini swarm of fruit flies in my kitchen.  That's just the tip of the iceberg, friends.  I'll be back when I can finally clean, and the dust is swept away for good.

In the meantime, here's something I saw in Sunday's paper that made me smile:

Giant, gorgeous getaway

The lack of posting has been due to the preparing for yet another trip.  With the entire family.  Our first in years.  My first time to Maui.  First time to Hawaii since age six.

Our flight was delayed an hour.  Which all adds up when one accounts for: shuttling to the car rental place: waiting in line:  driving 45 minutes to our destination:  stopping at the supermarket.  For the half who did not fly First Class.  Were very hungry.  And all were tired.

A quick meal (and beers) were quickly consumed.  Bed was fallen into.

And this morning, here is the view that was woken up to:

Our 'troubles' have been forgotten.  We'll be here for a week.  A.  Very.  Good.  Week.  Aloha!

Alameda

Tons of traffic made the drive down to the Bay Area much longer than it's meant to take.  But when we finally got to Alameda, the salty breeze in the air -- and a hearty lunch -- restored our spirits.  We fell into a food coma and had a slumbering siesta well into the afternoon.

shoreline walk

The smell of a neighbor's bbq wafting through the open windows roused us.  We took a long walk down the shoreline and through a nearby lagoon area where each of the houses had its own deck and dock, with rowboats and canoes and the like.  Willow trees, ducks, yards with grassy knolls.  It was idyllic.

The walk really worked up our appetites -- we could hardly wait for the pizza to be ready!  Thank goodness the trip back from there wasn't too long.  DC had seen "The Ramen Girl" on a plane during a recent trip, so we rented it because he thought I'd like it.  The story line was so-so, but the scenery made me nostalgic for Japan.  Though I didn't notice it at the time, DC later said that I genuinely laughed a lot as we were watching it!

What a lovely wind-down to our busy weekend!  Just what we needed to power-up for the six-hour-straight-shot back down to SoCal.
